The Hirschmann BRS40-8TX/4SFP switch is a standard Ethernet switch variant that comes in a plastic casing. The BRS40-8TX/4SFP Ethernet switch is a managed type of Hirschmann switch from the BOBCAT product line. Unlike an unmanaged switch that can operate without constant user supervision, a managed switch like the BRS40-8TX/4SFP switch needs to be managed directly by the users during operation. The supply voltage for this managed Ethernet switch is connected to it (specifically to its casing) through the protective elements, and this is the only way that the supply voltage can and should be connected to the switch. The BRS40-8TX/4SFP managed Ethernet switch can be used in all industrial locations that are not hazardous and in hazardous locations that are rated as Class 1, Division 2, Groups A, B, C, or D hazardous locations. 

If the Hirschmann BRS40-8TX/4SFP BOBCAT series managed Ethernet switch is used in a hazardous location, it must be installed in an enclosure that is strong enough to protect it, and its components must not be substituted or swapped out because this can render the switch unsuitable for hazardous environments, damage the switch, or even cause an explosion. The BRS40-8TX/4SFP managed Ethernet switch should also never be disconnected unless the power has been shut off and the area around it is known to be non-hazardous, because an improper disconnection can also cause an explosion. This switch should be installed in an enclosure even in non-hazardous environments because it is a piece of open equipment with no built-in protection. The BRS40-8TX/4SFP managed Ethernet switch comes with standard hardware and a data rate of 1000 Mbits per second.
